Description:

An introductory and systematic course in formal logic that presents the concepts and methodology in a clear, concise, and organized way. If the course presentation and layout is a reflection of a very logical mind, and Martin Cothran wrote and laid out the course, then Martin Cothran has a very logical mind. While this may or may not be true, it is, nonetheless, a valid argument. Written specifically for the home school environment, and for use by a teacher with no previous experience in formal logic, it seems a good candidate for a self-instructional course (provided you can offer help as needed). You will want to read the author's notes in the front, as he suggests an alternate route through the book if students have trouble with the abstract concepts presented in the first three chapters. The author's targeted grade level is high school, but it may be used with "advanced" 7th and 8th graders or adults as well. If you are using the classical approach with your children, they will probably be ready for this course in junior high. Two levels of the course are available. Book II is to be used only after completing Book I. It features a similar format, but also includes optional writing assignments to allow logic to be integrated with history, Bible, or English. Also, more real-life, contemporary examples of arguments are included. Case studies are also incorporated, to show the relevance of logic in history, literature, religion, and philosophy. The goal, after all, is for the student to apply what he has learned in all areas of life. Section titles include Further Study of Simple Syllogisms (chapters 1-4), Arguments in Ordinary Language (chapters 5-6), Hypothetical Syllogisms (chapters 7-9), Complex Syllogisms (chapters 10-13), the Oblique Syllogism (chapter 14), and a final review.

5AWESOME!May 13, 2009
By Brandy Bergenstock
I just reviewed the first book and saw someone had said that the program was only for people who had taken logic- not so! I never took logic in college and was able to find all the answers, but one, in the book whenever we looked for them (hint- look for the BOLD print!) We did not have an answer key, nor did I think we needed one. The DVD series was a bit boring according to my dd who took a homeschooling co-op class that used this text. I was impressed by the content as well the gradual building of difficultly. I was glad someone else was making her write umpteen papers on logic, but I could have done this book myself with her if the class had not been an option.
I think I should mention we had done "Fallacy Detective" and "Thinking Toolbox" before we did this series. I think that helped a wee bit, but I'm not sure how much. Those are both great texts for younger logicians, this text definitely ranks in the middle-high school years.

5Excellent series- get key and dvd's thoughAug 29, 2007
By M. Cureton
This is an excellent series by Cothran- Traditional Logic I & II are both excellent; very thorough- but please note - you will need the key to mark the exercises and the dvd's are a great help if you are using with your child, and your college days seem to be somewhere back in time (ahem!). Both the key and dvd's are currently unavailable through this seller.

1Two Thumbs DownSep 29, 2008
By Anne M. Evans
The answer key has too many errors - and whole pages missing. It is nearly impossible to guide a child through the advance portion of this program. The DVD is inadequate in that it simply reiterates the text and does not provide enough examples of practical application. Two thumbs down.
