• Designed with the first grader in mind. Letter forms are simplified but retain the classic form for legibility.
• Unnecessary strokes are eliminated. The NAC alphabet has 26 fewer strokes than the top three most common cursive programs.
• The NAC natural right, slant is easier for beginners and left-handers. If the slant is too far right it can be difficult for lefties. Writing absolutely vertically is tiring and can slow down the writing.
• The NAC program was created to be simple, clear, and effective. It focuses on accuracy and increasing legibility.
• A teaching guide is included. It takes students only twenty minutes of their day to practice in their NAC book.

A Bit on the Ugly Side But Easy for Kids to LearnMay 15, 2011

I picked up "New American Cursive" out of desperation after trying to teach my 8 y.o. via the Peterson Directed Handwriting method & experiencing major meltdowns on her part. Her main complaints about Peterson were that there were "too many loops" and that the letters were "too slanted". NAC is a very much streamlined cursive and it has only a slight slant. My daughter *LOVES* it. I personally think it's a bit on the ugly side, but at this point, I'd take a legible-but-ugly cursive over a pretty font that she is unwilling or unable to write.
I did draw the line at NAC's capital F, Q, T, and Z and insist that my daughter learn more traditional-looking versions of those. NAC's versions are basically slanted manuscript and I'm not okay with that.

I was looking for a font that was simple and pleasing (to me). Unlike the previous poster, I prefer the NAC way of the uppercase F, T, Q, and Z. When I was learning traditional cursive in school I always thought that those letters were the ugliest. So, to each his own. I will teach my children the NAC way and then make sure that they know how other fonts form those letters.
